Some of your friends and family may not realize that the company they work for does such a thing. Send them the following website

Matching Gifts

That website is amazing. Search a company name, you’ll get some search results, and if the company offers a match, it will tell you the proper procedures (most of the time) for that company.

One helpful tip is to research some of your contacts before you send them that e-mail (at this stage it should be your REMINDER e-mail, right?). If you have a LinkedIn account, you can easily find your contacts’ employers. If you plan to message some of your work contacts, go through your stack of business cards.

Your approach will be key though, because you don’t want them to think you are using them for their match, or don’t make them feel they are forced to donate now because their donation is potentially 2x greater. Take a friendly approach, reminding them that you’re fundraising for the Luekemia & Lymphoma Society and you noticed that their employer would give a matching donation. Add some of your personal touch to it. Ask them to fill out their employer’s matching gift form and send the payment to you. Also, you should only approach the people you personally know on LinkedIn. It will be difficult otherwise.

If you receive a donation from someone who works for a company that matches, please read the following:

Last season was the first time the team experimented with a blog format. We brought in a lot of social media aspects such as Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr. We also used a Facebook group, but we found it to be a limited to how we can communicate with the team. If you’re on Facebook, you should already understand the concept of becoming a Fan of a Page. It’s like becoming a fan of a celebrity, a brand, or a special event. It’s pretty much joining a group. They are pretty similar in feature set, but what is different is that there is a Wall in which users can write on, and Page interactions are viewed in the main feed. I’m currently trying to configure Twitter to update it as well.

Hope it’s not too confusing, but if you’re already on Facebook, become a fan of the page, and you’ll see the benefits of it. You don’t have to be an actual participant of the Winter Team. You can tell your friends and family too, so they can follow our adventures.

(note: there’s a “Share” button on the bottom left column of the Page, and you can spread the word that way.)

Why did you join Team in Training?

This is probably the most common question you will answer throughout the season to your teammates, family, friends, co-workers, and strangers. You will hear the answer from our honored teammates at our morning practices. You will hear the answer from our coaches. You will find these answers in our upcoming Featured Alumni section, as well as Team in Training Forums.

We found this topic in the Team in Training Community Forums. You will come across some really touching stories, so we strongly encourage that you check them out!
